Motherhood and God's Design for Women

Faith, Motherhood, Women

With Mother's Day right around the corner, I wanted to talk about the nature of motherhood, and God’s design for women.

And as we reflect on the beauty and complexity of mothering, we’ll explore here what it truly means to nurture, guide, and lead our families from a biblical perspective, embracing both the grace for our imperfections and the wisdom God provides for every season of motherhood.

As we step into this conversation on Biblical mothering, it’s important to begin with a deep breath and a grounding truth: God never intended for motherhood to be carried in perfection but only in faithfulness. In a world that constantly tells us to do more, be more, and hold everything together seamlessly, Scripture gently calls us back to something far more sustainable and life-giving.

Biblical mothering is not about performance; it’s about presence.

I wanna say that again. It’s about presence. And not present while you’re on your phone, sorry, I’m speaking to myself too, trust me, our whole worlds are on our phones and it can be tough but that’s why I wanted to touch on this.

Motherhood is about anchoring our hearts in God so that what flows out of us, our words, our reactions, our guidance comes from a place of alignment with Him rather than pressure from the world.

Isaiah 66:13 says “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you…”

Throughout the Bible, we see examples of imperfect women who were still used powerfully in God’s story. Mothers who faced uncertainty, fear, and overwhelming responsibility, yet chose to trust God in the middle of it all. That same invitation is extended to us. Biblical mothering isn’t about having all the answers or never losing patience. It’s about returning, again and again, to God’s grace. It’s about modeling repentance, humility, and reliance on Him in front of our children. In doing so, we’re not just raising them, we’re discipling them in what it looks like to live a life rooted in faith.

Proverbs 22:6 “Rear a child in the way that he should go”, and the Bible also says, “children, listen to your parents so that it will go well with you”. This is really important information for us to abide by.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Biblical motherhood, I think, is the reminder that our role is not to control outcomes, but to steward hearts. We plant seeds through our love, our consistency, and our willingness to point our children back to truth.

Our children are, after all, God’s. They don’t belong to us, they belong to Him. We are appointed as stewards, as trustees over them by God.

Psalm 127:3 says “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”
So some days that looks like meaningful conversations and intentional teaching. Other days, it simply looks like showing up, offering grace, and choosing patience when it would be easier to react and get crazy. God works in all of it. The good, the bad, and the ugly moments alike.

There is also a deep call to care for our own hearts in this journey. Biblical mothering doesn’t mean pouring from an empty cup; it means staying connected to the true source. When we spend time with God whether in prayer, Scripture, or quiet surrender, we are being filled, restored, and equipped for the work we’ve been given. Our children don’t need a perfect mother; they need a mother who is connected to a perfect Savior.

Deuteronomy 6:6–7 says “these commandments… Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road…”

So if you find yourself feeling inadequate, weary, or unsure if you’re “doing it right,” let this be your reminder: God chose you for your children on purpose. He is not asking you to be everything. He is asking you to walk with Him in everything. And in that partnership, there is grace for every misstep, strength for every hard day, and peace that meets you right where you are.

The truth is, Biblical mothering is ultimately about legacy. Not in the sense of having it all together, but in leaving behind a living example of faith. A legacy where your children can look back and say, “My mom trusted God. My mom kept going. My mom showed me what it looks like to love Him in real life.” And that, more than anything else, is what will stay with them for years to come.

Think of it like this, we want to be in Heaven one day, and have a stranger come up to us and say, I’m here because you led your daughter to salvation and she led her daughter to salvation, and she led her daughter to salvation, and that daughter was me. That’s your legacy. The only thing we can bring into heaven is our children. We should always be living this life in light of eternity.

This faith legacy is also mentioned in the Bible. In 2 Timothy 1:5 Paul calls it out and says “I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice…”

Friends, motherhood is one of the most sacred and shaping callings in Scripture. Rife with purpose, sacrifice, and strength. In a world filled with conflicting messages about what it means to be a “good mom”, the Bible gently calls us back to a higher standard grounded in love, faith, and obedience to God.

So be encouraged. You are doing holy, meaningful work, even in the moments that feel unseen, unappreciated, or overwhelming. Paul reminds us in 2 Timothy 4:7 to “fight the good fight” and “finish the race”, and that same perseverance lives in you as a mother. Keep showing up with love, with faith, and with courage. God sees your efforts, your sacrifices, and your heart. And on the days when you feel like it’s not enough, remember this: when you are giving your very best, anchored in Him, it is more than enough.

Keep going. you are making an eternal difference.
