Create a Welcoming Home: Easy Tips for Busy Lives
Home, Lifestyle, Interior Design
If you’ve ever looked around your home and thought, “I want this to feel warmer, calmer, more inviting,” but then immediately thought of the million things you have to do, this post is for you!
Because the truth is, creating a welcoming home doesn’t require:
• endless time
• a perfectly clean house
• expensive décor
• or a Pinterest-level makeover
A welcoming home is a feeling, and that feeling can be created in minutes. And further more, it’s our calling as wives and mamas! Scripture provides us with a beautiful, bold, and vibrant guide in Proverbs 31 and the Bible talks a lot about practicing hospitality. We’re called to do it!
In my book, Welcome Home: A Guide to Homemaking, From the Heart, I talk about how homemaking is less about perfection and more about creating a space that reflects peace, love, and intention. Even in busy seasons (especially in busy seasons), your home can still be a place where your family can exhale, and where you can get peace, joy, and beauty!
Let’s talk about how to create that atmosphere, starting today.

What Makes a Home Feel Welcoming?
A welcoming home is not the same thing as a perfect home.
A welcoming home feels:
• Calm instead of chaotic
• Lived-in but cared for
• Warm, inviting, and safe
• Intentional, even in the little details
When someone walks in (whether it’s your child coming home from school, your husband coming in from work, or a friend stopping by), the goal is this:
Your home feels like a soft landing place.
And I want you to know this: you can create that feeling even when you’re busy.
The Secret to a Welcoming Home (Hint: It’s Not More Work)
Here’s the shift that changes everything:
A welcoming home is built through small rhythms, not big projects.
Instead of thinking:
“I need to deep clean the whole house.”
Think:
“What can I do in the next 5–10 minutes to create peace?”
Busy women don’t need more pressure. We need simple systems we can return to.

How to Create a Welcoming Home When You’re Busy (The Welcome Home Method)
Below are my favorite ways to make your home feel welcoming fast-revealed through the lens of what I call The Welcome Home Method:
1.) Reset One Space (Not the Whole House)
If you have five minutes, don’t try to tackle your whole home.
Choose one visible space:
• Entryway table
• Kitchen counter
• Coffee table
• Dining table
• The couch
Then do the quick reset:
• Put items back where they belong
• Throw away trash
• Straighten pillows/blanket
• Clear 1 surface
This is powerful because your eyes relax when one area looks calm. Personally, I get anxiety with visual clutter.
Pro tip: The kitchen counter is often the “heartbeat” of the home. Resetting it changes everything.
2.) Create a Signature Scent
One of the fastest ways to make a home feel welcoming is scent.
You can have a busy house, toys on the floor, laundry in the hallway and if your home smells clean and cozy, it instantly feels more inviting.
Try:
• A candle (vanilla, linen, or citrus)
• Essential oil diffuser (lavender, eucalyptus, lemon)
• Linen spray on the couch and curtains
• Simmer pot (lemon + rosemary, orange + cinnamon)
Scent sets the tone of a home.
And the beautiful thing? It takes 30 seconds.
3.) Set the Tone With Light & Sound
A welcoming home isn’t only physical- it’s emotional.
So here are some homemaking tricks I love:
• Turn on music
• Open a curtain
• Add warm lighting
If you do nothing else, do this.
A simple playlist or station can instantly make your home feel joyful and peaceful. I often listen to jazz or worship music. Warm light makes a home feel safe and cozy. Natural light makes it feel fresh.
This is a huge part of homemaking- creating ambience.

A Simple “Welcome Home” Routine That Takes Only 5 Minutes
If you help your home feel welcoming daily, your home never gets far from peaceful.
Here’s a simple 5-minute routine you can do before dinner or before your family walks in:
The 5-Minute Welcome Home Routine:
1. Clear one surface
2. Pick up
3. Start a scent or turn on music
4. Open curtains or turn on warm lights
5. Fluff pillows + fold throw blanket
That’s it. That’s the whole routine.
This is how a busy, hardworking wife and/or mama creates a welcoming home-not by doing everything, but by doing a few high-impact things consistently!
What If My Home Is Messy?
Let me say something that so many women need to hear:
A welcoming home isn’t a spotless home. It’s a loved home.
When your home is busy and full of life, it won’t always look perfect.
But hospitality isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence! Social media would lead us to believe that we have to have perfection, on 8 foot marble kitchen islands in new builds. Not true my friends!
A guest (or family member) won’t remember if your floors were spotless but they will remember how your home made them feel.
Welcoming Home Tips for Busy Women (Quick Wins)
Here are some quick wins you can apply this week:
• Keep a small basket in the living room for clutter
• Keep a candle in the kitchen and light it daily
• Create a “drop zone” in the entryway (keys, shoes, bag)
• Do a 10-minute reset every night and engage your family in this
• Choose one day a week for a deeper reset (not every day)

Final Encouragement: Welcoming Doesn’t Mean Perfect
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect to be welcoming. It just needs to be intentional.
Even a busy home can be a peaceful home, one day at a time.
Welcome Home.
XO, Gina
